21 Days of Yoga
August 2, 2011 § Leave a Comment
It’s been a while, little bloggy, and a lot has happened that I plan on updating but for now I want to move forward and let you all know that I plan on participating in Jenna’s 21 Day Yoga Challenge. I think it’s a great idea and the fact that even 5 minutes a day counts totally floats my boat.
Tonight I’m going with her suggestion of the lunar flow from Yoga Download. It sounds like the perfect class to kick off three weeks of yoga. My body & mind will be most grateful.

College Roomies & Camping
July 14, 2011 § Leave a Comment
Tomorrow morning I’m heading off to go visit some college friends and then go camping with my man! This long weekend is exactly what both of us need – it’s hard being unemployed in a beautiful city, you know?
We’ll be near Sisters, Oregon with no cell phones or computers or television.

The three 'Sisters'
It will be glorious & hopefully sunny so I can get my tan on. We plan on eating vegetarian while we’re camping, and I get to be in charge of the food so I’m making sure we have lots of healthy & delicious meals!
See ya when we get back!
Another Gym Attempt Thwarted

I’m so happy I’m not red!
Well I had quite the eventful evening! After eating a mighty healthy dinner full of mahi mahi, quinoa, Mmmm sauce (go make this now!), and mixed greens from Trader Joe’s I suddenly found myself with a severe allergic reaction. My best guess was the turnip greens found in my mixed greens bag. I think this because I had the exact same dinner last night, but instead of greens I had kale and nothing happened. Tonight, however, was a different story.
About 15 or 20 minutes after eating my delicious meal I was getting my workout clothes on and felt my face getting hotter and hotter. Once I looked in the mirror I immediately knew I was having an allergic reaction of some sort even though this hasn’t ever happened before. Luckily nothing was swelling up and my airways felt fine, so I went down to show my roommate and she gave me one of her allergy pills with an antihistamine in it (same as a Benadryl). I grew a bit more concerned as my heat rash spread down my chest, back, and arms and I could tell it wasn’t getting any better. At this point I decided to call a nurse hotline and after answering a series of questions she told me to call 911.
Um, WHAT?!?!!
I felt fine other than the extreme heat and my lobster (seriously, I was that red) – like appearance but apparently flushing is a sign of anaphylactic shock and that I could experience worse symptoms like constriction of airways. Cue me calling the paramedics, feeling like a dummy when they said I was fine, and then having the rash go away about an hour and a half after it all started. Luckily my broham and his girlfriend stayed with me and we chatted for a bit about my horrible roommate until I was feeling better.
Moral of the story: Greens can kill you. Well, not really, but maybe today was a sign that I shouldn’t go to the gym and instead sit at home and catch up on blogs like I am right now
My Butt Hurts

Yesterday I took a spinning class, something I haven’t done in over 3 years and man oh man did I forget how painful those things are. First of all, those seats are incredibly uncomfortable and I was wearing the thinnest pants ever. My sit bones are definitely feeling it today, and I have a ‘downstairs’ waxing appointment at 2:30 today so that will be FUN!
Spinning is rough. I mean seriously, the instructor was telling us to crank up the resistance to 2 1/2 and I could barely manage 1. I felt like a loser, but at least I was doing something other than the sorority swiffer. And thanks a lot back muscles for tensing up and causing me even more pain.
At least I torched around 500 calories and got a good sweaty workout in before I scarfed down artichoke dip, crab risotto, and a huge ice cream sundae. It was all amazing and I didn’t feel one bit guilty that I was eating such a decadent dinner. Progress!

My Favorite Breakfast
July 10, 2011 § Leave a Comment
Once I find something I love I stick with it, even though it may be plain and boring. That’s why I love oatmeal combined with a scoop of peanut butter, banana, and some cinnamon. It’s easy to make, filling, and tastes so good that I am happy eating it almost every morning. Pair my usual breakfast with a cup of coffee and I’m good to go.
While at my parent’s house this weekend, recovering from a cold, I tried out steel-cut oatmeal since that is what they had on hand. I liked it, but it took a lot longer to cook than regular oatmeal and didn’t have as much volume as I’m used to.

This weekend the boy has been over, which means I am eating a lot more as well as foods I wouldn’t normally buy for myself. Instead of beating myself up about indulging though, I’m working on letting myself enjoy our foodie date nights and go with the flow. An ice cream here or a burger there won’t hurt anything, and the fact that we both went to the gym yesterday helps also.
Last night we went out to The Counter, a build your own burger place, where I had an amazing homemade veggie burger with grilled onions, roasted red pepper, lettuce, tomato, and roasted garlic aioli. It was amazing. Also super cheap since I had a Groupon for the place. I want to go back today and tomorrow and forever.
While eating there I’ve decided to make a change in the meat I consume. From here on out I am eating a mostly pescetarian diet, and may have a chicken or turkey dish every once in a while but if I have a veggie option that will be my go-to instead of choosing meat. I’m going to write a blog post about my views on our food system soon, but for now I feel like my values about food don’t coincide with how the U.S. treats animals, and I feel a lot better not eating meat as well.
